She uses the media of ink, water-colour and water-based oil as a vehicle for alluding to the form, the function and the emotion of her subject. Landscape and its reference both to actual place and places of the subconscious are what can be found lurking in her paintings. Raaff's most notable earlier works in water-colour and ink capturing beach and city figures and aerial Google satellite images of distinctly different South African neighbourhoods, rely on a cool relationship between herself and the subject and revel in the abstract qualities of the view.\n\n‘My most recent works are a continuation of my interest in photography as a means of fixing an image and using found imagery as a starting point for my paintings. The imagery that piques my interest is mostly sourced from local newspapers and has allowed me to investigate the juxtaposition of the shocking and banal realities of a suburban neighbourhood and to explore how two realities can exist in a single experience.\n\nI consider my personal act of painting to be a wrestling between intention and chance and an undoing of certainty. Some of the brushstrokes exhibit crisp linework\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, while others bleed like an actual ink drawing. This is not a simple effect to recreate in a woodcut, and takes careful planning and an intimate familiarity with the material to execute. The end result is a print that does not read like a print while simultaneously embracing the tell-tale marks of a woodcut.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNatasha Norman\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNatasha completed her Honours (2005) and Masters (2011) degree in Fine Art at the University of Cape Town. She currently works as a part-time lecturer, arts writer and practicing artist. Throughout her art training and career she has consistently been inspired by the medium and technical challenges of print. She trained in traditional Western print methods at the University of Cape Town and subsequently attended residencies in Japan to study the Japanese relief print method, Mokuhanga.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNatasha’s mastery of printmaking enables her to work across various print techniques. Her work is deeply inspired by her experiences of the natural world. Her practice is about experiencing time and place. In her optically shifting colour layers and planes of marks and tone is an elementary, sensory memory.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn recent works, Natasha has taken much inspiration from the Japanese cultural aesthetic\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003ewabi sabi\u003c\/em\u003e. Her study of this term that defies translation has fostered an appreciation for the beauty in transient natural moments and a sense of spiritual well-being centred on imperfection and simplicity. Some of the brushstrokes exhibit crisp linework, while others bleed like an actual ink drawing. This is not a simple effect to recreate in a woodcut, and takes careful planning and an intimate familiarity with the material to execute. The end result is a print that does not read like a print while simultaneously embracing the tell-tale marks of a woodcut.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNatasha Norman\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNatasha completed her Honours (2005) and Masters (2011) degree in Fine Art at the University of Cape Town. She currently works as a part-time lecturer, arts writer and practicing artist. Throughout her art training and career she has consistently been inspired by the medium and technical challenges of print. She trained in traditional Western print methods at the University of Cape Town and subsequently attended residencies in Japan to study the Japanese relief print method, Mokuhanga.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNatasha’s mastery of printmaking enables her to work across various print techniques. Her work is deeply inspired by her experiences of the natural world. Her practice is about experiencing time and place. She trained in traditional Western print methods at the University of Cape Town and subsequently attended residencies in Japan to study the Japanese relief print method, Mokuhanga.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNatasha’s mastery of printmaking enables her to work across various print techniques. Her work is deeply inspired by her experiences of the natural world. Her practice is about experiencing time and place.
