Xanthe Scout
Xanthe Scout (b. 1998, South Africa) is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and writer based in Cape Town. Working across painting and sculpture, her practice is rooted in process, chance, and the tension between control and unpredictability. Lardner-Burke’s paintings often evolve from watered-down substrates that shift and pool over time, while her sculptural works translate the intimate scale of gesture into more enduring, material form.
Her work explores themes of precarity, language, structures, and systems of value — probing how meaning is produced, and how instability can be both a generative and disruptive force. By allowing accident and imperfection to guide her process, she opens space for questions about authorship, permanence, and the narratives embedded in material.
A graduate of the Michaelis School of Fine Art (2021), Lardner-Burke has exhibited widely, including solo and group exhibitions with institutions such as SMAC Gallery and 99 Loop Gallery. Her recent projects include Offcuts (curated at the Association for Visual Arts, 2024), and she was named a finalist for the 2024 ANNA Award.
Continuing to expand her practice, Lardner-Burke positions her work as a site for experimentation — testing the limits of form, chance, and value, while foregrounding materiality as a way to think through broader cultural and structural concerns.
